Department Overview

GISM offers several Certificate courses, Diploma courses and Bachelor’s degree, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s degree pathways. Also, GISM supports direct transfer for Masters and PhD research studies.

The Department of Science at GISM is dedicated to developing strong analytical, research, and scientific skills required for careers in biological sciences, environmental studies, biotechnology, and research-oriented fields. Through internationally recognised degree pathways this department enables students to begin their academic journey in Sri Lanka and complete globally respected science qualifications overseas.

Our New Zealand qualification pathways provide students with research-led learning to develop analytical and critical thinking and problem-solving skills which are highly valued in bioscience industry. There are wide range of career opportunities in the fields such as healthcare, technology, research, and engineering.

Department of Science offers degree pathways (1+2) in Graduate-level and 8-10 months + 1 year in Postgraduate level in collaboration with Massey University, New Zealand. Upon successful completion of the first part of studies at GISM Campus, students will earn the relevant credits and directly transfer to New Zealand Massey University to continue.

Diploma Diploma in Food Technology Diploma in Food Technology is one of the most demanding and high paying career streams and as awareness of health and diet increases day by day, a lot of companies offer various opportunities to the candidates having interest and qualification in the Food Technology sector.
Diploma Diploma in Bioscience Successful completion of this GISM diploma (Year 1 at GISM) allows direct entry into the second year of the Massey University Bachelor of Science pathway programme.
Diploma Diploma in Agri Technology Successful completion of this GISM diploma (Year 1 at GISM) allows direct entry into the second year of the Massey University Bachelor of Agribusiness pathway programme.

With the right choice of first-year courses, you can keep your options open when it comes to selecting your major in your second year. In GISM pathway, there are three major options for you to select.

For GISM students, a scholarship discount of 15% from the international course fee will be granted if anyone who is interested in studying postgraduate programme after completing the Bachelor of Science degree at Massey University.

Entry Requirements

 

  • Minimum three “C” passes at G.C.E (A/L) Examination or London (A/L) Examination, including Biology and Chemistry. OR,
  • Minimum three “C” passes at G.C.E (A/L) Examination (Old Syllabus) including Biology and Chemistry. OR,
  • C.E. O/L (Local or London) + GISM Foundation Programme (Successfully completed with B average) AND
  • Selection by an interview.

You can start postgraduate Diploma at GISM Campus and then specialize Biological Science under Master of Science programme offered at Massey University. When you study Massey’s Master of Science with a major in biological sciences you don’t have to focus on one particular type of science. You will gain expertise across a range of interests. Are you interested in subjects like microbiology, genetics and biochemistry, but don’t have all the prerequisites you need to specialize, then, your desires will be fulfilled with this general bioscience major. Do you want to open the door to a broader range of careers? A major in biological sciences gives you a broad-based degree that keeps your options open. Within the degree you can focus on one area of science or keep your study broad – the choice is yours. 

Entry Requirements

To enter the Master of Science you have been awarded or qualified with:

  • Bachelor of Science degree majored in Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology or similar discipline with a minimum B- average from a recognized university OR,
  • Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology or similar discipline from a recognized university and minimum one year post degree experience in relevant field OR,
  • An equivalent qualification + experience accepted by the GISM’s Science Faculty Board.

 

Selection will be based on an interview
